What is Pounamu?
Our international customers often ask what is Pounamu? They have heard about Jade and sometimes Greenstone, but often not Pounamu. In fact, all three names refer to the same mineral which geologist name nephrite. Pounamu is the Maori name for nephrite jade, which was traditionally sourced from the rivers in the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand and was used for crafting tools and jewellery. While Pounamu is no longer used for tools, it is still used to create beautiful jewellery.
Cultural Significance
Pounamu holds particular significance in Maori culture. It is often worn against the skin, absorbing some of the mana of the wearer. Some pieces have been passed on to family members for several generations.
Given that pounamu has such strong cultural significance, as part of Treaty of Waitangi settlements, all naturally occurring Pounamu was returned to the ownership of Ngai Tahu. Ngai Tahu has implemented a resource management plan to ensure that Pounamu will be available for generations to come.
